Impact of magnesium on the structure of aluminoborosilicate glasses: A solid‐state NMR and Raman spectroscopy study

Seven magnesium-containing aluminoborosilicate glasses, with three to five oxides, have been studied through comprehensive multinuclear solid-state NMR (11B, 27Al, 29Si, 23Na, 17O, and 25Mg) Raman spectroscopy. The progressive addition of cations the substitution sodium calcium by magnesium illuminate impact on glass structure. proportion tri-coordinated boron drastically increased addition, demonstrating poor charge-compensating capabilities in tetrahedral units. Oxygen-17 showed formation mixing sites containing both Na Mg near nonbridging oxygen sites. Furthermore, a high content appears result two subnetworks (boron silicon rich) different polymerization degrees as well promote high-coordination aluminum (Al[V] Al[VI]). Finally, coordination ranging from 4 6, mean value shifting 5 6 along series, suggests that might endorse an intermediate role these glasses.
